ในการเรียนรู้ภาษาอังกฤษ หรือแม้แต่ภาษาอะไรก็ตาม สำนวนหรือ ‘idiom’ เป็นสิ่งที่สำคัญมาก เนื่องจากสำนวนเป็นสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นมาจากทัศนคติของสังคมหรือค่านิยมความเชื่อ ซึ่งจะแตกต่างกันออกไปในแต่ละสังคม จึงทำให้เราไม่สามารถเดาความหมายที่แท้จริงของสำนวนได้เลย หรือทำได้ยาก หากไม่เรียนรู้มาก่อนนั่นเองครับ

ซึ่งในบทความนี้ผมก็อยากจะนำเสนอ 20 สำนวนภาษาอังกฤษที่น่าสนใจ และพบเจอได้บ่อยๆในชีวิตประจำวัน เพื่อนๆสามารถเรียนรู้แล้วอาจจะลองนำไปใช้ดูก็ได้นะคร้าบ
1. ‘Rise and shine’ – ใช้ในการปลุกใครสักคนตอนเช้าๆ เป็นการบอกให้ลุกขึ้นและให้สดชื่น กระปรี้กระเปร่า

ตัวอย่างประโยค “Wake up! Rise and shine, we’re off to Beijing today!”

2. ‘Speak of the devil’ - คนที่คุณกำลังพูดถึงอยู่นั้นปรากฏตัวขึ้น ตรงกับภาษาไทยคำว่า “ตายยากจริงๆ” นั่นเอง

ตัวอย่างประโยค “Hi Tom, speak of the devil, I was just telling Sara about your new car.”
“Jane is just never on time to work, it’s really annoying. Wow, Speak of the devil here she comes.”

3. ‘See eye to eye’ - เห็นด้วยกับความคิดเห็นของอีกฝ่าย หรือใช้กับการแสดงความคิดเห็นที่ไปในทางเดียวกันได้เหมือนกัน

ตัวอย่างประโยค “They finally saw eye to eye on the business deal.”

4. ‘Once in a blue moon’ - หมายถึง เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นไม่บ่อยนัก หรือนานทีปีหนจะเกิดขึ้นสักครั้งหนึ่ง

ตัวอย่างประโยค “I only go to the cinema once in a blue moon.”
“I don’t really like going out to bars anymore. I only go once in a blue moon”

5. ‘When pigs fly’ - หมายถึง สิ่งที่เป็นไปไม่ได้ หรือไม่มีวันจะเกิดขึ้น

ตัวอย่างประโยค
“When pigs fly she’ll tidy up her room.
A: “Do you think Mary will quit her job now that she’s pregnant?” B: “Yeah, when pigs fly! There is no way she is giving up her career!”

6. ‘To cost an arm and a leg’ - หมายถึง ราคาแพงมาก คือมีนัยว่ากว่าจะได้มาต้องแลกด้วยแขนและขาเชียวล่ะ

ตัวอย่างประโยค
“Fuel these days costs an arm and a leg.”
“Greg’s new car costs him an arm and a leg, but he delightfully paid for it.”

7. ‘A piece of cake’ - หมายถึง หมายถึงเรื่องกล้วยๆ มีความหมายว่า ง่ายเหมือนปอกกล้วยเข้าปาก

“The English test was a piece of cake.”

8. ‘Let the cat out of the bag’ - หมายถึง หลุดปากเผยความลับออกมา

“I let the cat out of the bag about their wedding plans.”
“I was trying to keep the party a secret, but Jim went and let the cat out of the bag.”

9. ‘To feel under the weather’ - หมายถึง ไม่สบาย ป่วย

ตัวอย่างประโยค
“I’m really feeling under the weather today; I have a terrible cold.”

10. ‘To kill two birds with one stone’ - หมายถึง ยิงปืนนัดเดียวได้นกสองตัว

ตัวอย่างประโยค
“By taking my dad on holiday, I killed two birds with one stone. I got to go away but also spend time with him.”
“We can visit Aunt Jennie and also see New York City on the same trip, thus killing two birds with one stone.”

11.‘To cut corners’ - หมายถึง ทำงานแบบขอไปที หรือ ทำงานแบบชุ่ยๆ ถูกๆ

“They really cut corners when they built this bathroom; the shower is leaking.”

12. ‘To add insult to injury’ – หมายถึง ทำให้สถานการณ์แย่ลง

ตัวอย่างประโยค
“To add insult to injury the car drove off without stopping after knocking me off my bike.” แปลว่า แย่ยิ่งกว่านั้นอีก พอชนฉันหล่นจากจักรยานเสร็จรถคันนั้นก็ขับหนีไปเลย

13. ‘You can’t judge a book by its cover’ - หมายถึง อย่าตัดสินคนหรือสิ่งของจากรูปลักษณ์ภายนอก

“I thought this no-brand bread would be horrible; turns out you can’t judge a book by its cover.”

14. ‘Break a leg’ - หมายถึง ขอให้โชคดี ส่วนมากจะบอกกับนักแสดงก่อนขึ้นเวที

ตัวอย่างประโยค
“Break a leg Sam, I’m sure your performance will be great.” แปลว่า ขอให้โชคดีนะแซม ฉันเชื่อว่าเธอต้องทำได้ดีแน่ๆ

15. ‘To hit the nail on the head’ - หมายถึง พูดตรงจุดมากเลย พูดเข้าเรื่อง

ตัวอย่างประโยค
“He hit the nail on the head when he said this company needs more HR support.”
“He hit the nail on the head when he mentioned rising prices as being the cause of our present problems.”

16. ‘Jack of all trades’ - หมายถึง คนที่รู้ทุกอย่าง รู้ทุกเรื่อง แต่ไม่เก่งจริงสักอย่าง

ตัวอย่างประโยค
“A jack of all trades,master of none.” แปลว่า รู้ไปหมด แต่ไม่เก่งสักอย่าง

17. ‘Get in someone’s hair’ - หมายถึง รบกวนหรือก่อความรำคาญ

ตัวอย่างประโยค
“Susan was trying to prepare dinner, but her children were getting in her hair!”
“Get out of my hair!” (ใช้เวลาโต้กลับว่า อย่ามากวนได้ไหม!)

18. ‘Join the club’ - หมายถึง หัวอกเดียวกัน, เหมือนกันเลย, พวกเดียวกัน

ตัวอย่างประโยค
“You hate getting up in the morning? Join the club.”
‘We can’t afford a vacation this year.’ ‘Welcome to the club!’

19. ‘Devil may care’ - หมายถึง ไม่แยแส ไม่ใยดี หรือทำตัวเป็นทองไม่รู้ร้อน ไม่ใส่ใจต่อการกระทำของตัวเอง

“He has a rather devil-may-care attitude to his studies”

20. ‘Let someone down’ - หมายถึง ทำให้ใครบางคนผิดหวัง

ตัวอย่างประโยค
“I need you to be on time, don’t let me down this time”
