เราพูดว่า “ชาวนามีปัญญาทำนาเป็นอาชีพ”  ไม่ใช่ เพียงแค่รู้ หรือ อ่านมา แต่มี “ปัญญา” เพราะปัญญา หมายถึง การ เรียนรู้, คิดวิเคราะห์, และ ปฏิบัติ โดยคนเราไม่จำเป็นต้องสอบผ่านเพื่อที่จะมีปัญญา แต่ปัญญาเกิดจากการเดินตามหลักการทางพุทธศาสนาที่แสนจะธรรมดา และเรียบง่าย

ในอำเภอหางดง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ โรงเรียนวิถีพุทธ ชื่อโรงเรียน ปัญญาเด่น ตั้งอยู่อย่างสงบ ท่ามกลางธรรมชาติที่เงียบสงบ มีอาคารเรียนทำจากดินเหนียวมุงจาก แปลกตาด้วยดีไซน์เรียบง่ายแต่ล้ำสมัย นักเรียนมาจากหลากหลายชาติ เรียน และทำกิจกรรมร่วมกันอย่างสนุกสนาน ในสภาพแวดล้อมที่เป็นธรรมชาติและเอื้อต่อการเรียนรู้ มีพื้นที่ให้วิ่งเล่นอย่างเต็มที่

อาจจะฟังดูเหมือนว่าโรงเรียนนี้ก็เป็นเหมือนๆกับโรงเรียนทางเลือกอื่นๆที่เปิดกันมากมาย ในช่วง 3-5 ปีที่ผ่านมา แต่โรงเรียนปัญญาเด่นมีจุดเด่น ตรงที่ใช้หลักสูตรแบบบูรณาการ ควบคู่กับแนวคิดวิถีพุทธ เช่น การรู้จักประมาณตน รวมทั้งการสร้างระเบียบวินัย ที่จะทำให้เด็กเกิด ทักษะในการคิดวิเคราะห์ และสามัญสำนึก (common sense)ที่ดีตั้งแต่วัยเยาว์ ซึ่งสามัญสำนึก เป็นสิ่งที่สำคัญที่สุด ที่จะทำให้เด็กๆมีทักษะในการเรียนรู้ที่ดี ไม่ว่าจะอยู่ในโรงเรียนหรือสถานการณ์ใดๆ

เด็กๆชั้นประถมของที่นี่มีวิธีเรียนรู้ที่ต่างออกไปจากโรงเรียนกระแสหลักซึ่งมุ่งเน้นการสอบมากกว่าการปฏิบัติจริง ที่โรงเรียนปัญญาเด่น เด็กๆจะได้ลงไปเหยียบท้องนาอย่างไม่ขัดเขิน  เรียนรู้วิชาเลขจากการนับจำนวนต้นกล้า ศึกษาการเจริญเติบโต และวงจรชีวิตของต้นข้าวซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของวิชาวิทยาศาสตร์ รวมถึงการปลูก เกี่ยว สี หุง คดข้าวใส่จาน ด้วยตัวเองทั้งหมด การเรียนรู้เช่นนี้ ให้ผลลึกซึ้งกว่าการเรียนในห้องเรียนเพียงอย่างเดียว นอกจากนี้เด็กๆได้เรียนรู้หลักธรรมจากคุณธรรม 12 ประการ (12 Wise Habits) อย่างเช่น  การสำรวมร่างกาย การมีสติ การมีขันติ (ความอดทน) การมีวิริยะ (ความเพียร) การมีสมาธิ และการคิดเป็น

เพียงแค่กิจกรรมการทำนา ก็ทำให้เด็กประถมได้เรียนวิชาที่หลากหลาย ทั้งคณิตศาสตร์ วิทยาศาสตร์ และ พละศึกษาไปพร้อมๆกัน ที่สำคัญที่สุด คือ พวกเขายังได้เรียนรู้ที่จะเคารพในอาชีพเกษตรกร และ รู้ซึ้งถึงคุณค่าของธรรมชาติ... วิชาจริยธรรม และสามัญสำนึกนี่เอง คือสิ่งที่สอนกันได้ยากที่สุดในโลก 

เราบ่นเรื่องระบบการศึกษาไทยที่ล้มเหลว แต่ก็ยังส่งลูกหลานเข้าไปเรียนในโรงเรียนที่อยู่ในระบบนั้นซ้ำแล้วซ้ำเล่า  เด็กประถมที่สอบผ่าน พาตัวเองไปตามระบบที่คัดเลือกเด็กผ่านตะแกรงหยาบๆที่ดูถูกศักยภาพของมนุษย์ซ้ำแล้วซ้ำเล่า และจบลงที่อาชีพที่ทำได้ แต่ไม่ชอบ และไม่มีความหลงใหลในงานของตัวเอง

โรงเรียนทางเลือกอาจไม่ใช่ทางเลือกของเรา แต่เรามีทางเลือกเสมอ...เราสามารถเลือกได้ว่าอยากให้ลูกเราเรียนเก่ง หรือ ใช้ชีวิตเก่ง เราเลือกได้ว่าจะชื่นชมในความดีที่มีอยู่ หรือเปรียบเทียบอย่างไม่เกิดประโยชน์...แต่ไม่ว่าอย่างไร การตัดสินใจก็เป็นของเราเสมอ

The  “Wisdom” of a ten year-old child - Learning the hardest subject in the world from One Rice Field

We might say “wisdom is the career of farmers” because wisdom means not only knowing or reading but also learning, analyzing and practicing. Wisdom cannot be tested for. It rises naturally from following a Buddhism approach to life.

Chiangmai Buddhist education school, Panyaden, is situated in a peaceful environment with its simple by yet modern-design building made from earth and bamboo. Students from various different countries enjoy learning and doing activities together in the spacious green environment.

It might seem at first that Panyaden is like all the other alternative schools that have been opened in this last 3-5 years. However, Panyaden’s unique strength is in the integration of Buddhist principles and a modern bilingual curriculum, resulting in a holistic education. Self-sufficiency, self-discipline and the application of analytical skills and common sense are important attributes for a child not only in school but also in any situation.

Primary students here learn differently from regular schools that focus mainly on examinations instead of real practice. Students are as comfortable in the rice field as the classroom, learning mathematics from counting the rice sprouts, studying science by observing the plant cycle from planting to  harvesting, then cooking and serving the fruits of their labour on their own plates. This particular form of study provides a deeper result than simply learning in the classroom. 

From rice farming alone, students will learn many subjects all at the same time, like mathematics, science and physical education. More importantly, they learn to respect the work of farmers and to be grateful to nature, virtues which are some of the most difficult to teach in the world.

Through these and other activities students learn and practice the school’s key learning goals, the 12 Wise Habits such as generosity, mindfulness, patient endurance, perseverance, concentration and wise reflection. 

We complain about how poor the Thai education system is, but we still send our children through the same system, again and again. Primary students are expected to pass examinations which filter them into a system that really underestimates human ability time and time again, ending up with a job which they can do but have no passion for.

Alternative schools are not many people’s first choice. But we do have a choice. We can choose for our children to focus on academics or we can choose that they know how to live their life wisely. We can choose to praise them when they become a good person. Or we can compare them against something which has little use. It is our choice.
